Halloween
So I must say...I struggle with posting this pic because I hate the Leia hair. The whole part down the middle and cinnamon buns bug me. Oh well, I guess I was pretty realistic because all of the little boys who like Star Wars were dumbfounded to see me passing out candy. One little boy was dressed as Luke Skywalker in the orange flying jumpsuit and even though his mom was telling him to move, he couldn't. He just stood there staring at me with awe on his face for about 3 whole minutes. Haha. I must say, it was pretty cute! There were also adults who would ask to take my picture, either with or without their kid, and say "I saw Star Wars when it was in the theatres!!" I found out, everyone loves Leia! My kids weren't the only ones who pointed out that Leia uses a gun, but I told them I'm not wearing a gun to trunk or treat! =) Brandon was Luke Skywalker, and I wish we could have entered the costume contest together but Brandon was driving the hayride tractor, and I was passing out candy at our car. Oh well, maybe next year. I wish I would have been able to take pictures because it was AWESOME! There was a HUGE hay maze made out of 1000 hay bales. You had to find pirate treasure coins when you went in and there were pirates at the top keeping an eye on things, then you exchanged your coins for candy on the way out. There were lots of kiddie carnival games, and bounce houses, etc.
My brother in law is the guy on the other side of me, in case you didn't notice the family resemblance. Brandon had already put his lightsaber in the car.

Pumpkin Spritz Cookies!
Today I remembered that I have a pumpkin disk for my cookie press! Woo hoo! I whipped up some spritz cookie dough even though I usually only make them at Christmas time, with trees. I must say...these aren't everyone's favorite cookies, but they hold a special place in my heart. I've made spritz cookies since I was old enough to have a memory! They are pretty plain, and in my opinion, need to be eaten when they are COMPLETELY cool...but I love them!
I used Wilton's orange coloring.
Just use a toothpick and put a dollop in the mixer, mix until you get your desired shade.
This is my Pampered Chef cookie press. Actually I think it's my mom's that she brought out in her suitcase one Christmas and she forgot to take home. =)
Here it is fitted with the pumpkin disk.
Here is the set and all of the other disk shapes. This is the best cookie press I've ever used, in all my 28 years! If you've made this type of cookie before, you know that sometimes they can be tempermental.
Top with sprinkles! I must say...as I was pressing these, I couldn't help but think that I was making cookies out of sweet potato baby food, that's exactly what it looked like.
1 cup margarine or butter
1 tsp vanilla
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cup flour
Mix softened margarine or butter {note: I have always used marg. for this recipe but today I used butter because I don't buy marg. as a rule...everything's better with butter, right? Wrong! I can't believe I'm saying this but they have more flavor when you use margarine} with sugar and vanilla until well combined. Add eggs, mix well. Add flour gradually.
Use UNgreased cookie sheets (or they won't stick and you will go mad! Mad, I tell you!)
Heat your oven to 400 degrees
Follow the directions for your cookie press, if you're having trouble with the dough, try sticking it in the fridge for a bit.

{Halloween cookie bark}
Emma is going to give a "how-to" speech this week and she is going to teach how to make cookie bark! We decided to make little samples for the other kids to take home and try it. I got this idea from my friend Trish, and she got it from Your Home Based Mom.
Start out by lining your cookie sheet with wax paper. Break up pretzels and oreos and spread out on the tray. Add candy corn and fall colored m & m's.
Melt your candy disks, only microwave 30 seconds at a time or they will seize up into a chunky mess. Stir every 30 seconds until they are fully melted.
Spread the melted disks out on the tray and make sure all of the pieces are covered. Use a spatula to help. Top with a few extra candy corn and Halloween sprinkles. Wait for it to dry. Some people put it in the fridge to speed it up, but since I was going to package it, I was worried about it "sweating" if it was cold.

{Giant candy corn}
My friend, Trish, and I have been planning on making these giant candy corn together ever since I saw them on a blog. Click on the link if you would like to see the original version. With our schedules conflicting for over a few weeks and no end in sight (at least no kid-free time end in sight!) we decided to just combine materials and make them at home. Mine are a bit different from the original blog because I didn't distress and stain them after painting. I like them as is...at least for now. ;)
I freehanded the shapes on a board that I already had and Trish had a leftover piece of beadboard so we shared. Don't you just love having fellow crafters as friends? This afternoon I broke out the jigsaw and started cutting the pieces. My hubby stepped in and offered to help after the first piece...maybe he was afraid I would cut a finger off or something. =)
After cutting the thicker wood shapes, I laid them on the back of the beadboard and traced around them. Then cut the beadboard. I painted what would be the back side of the thick board with a few coats of white paint.
I used hot glue smeared over the back of the beadboard to attach and then hotglued around the entire edge. Then I painted the tip of the candy corn white, the middle orange, and the widest end yellow. I used shades that I already had because I'm an uber cheapskate. It's kind of a dark orange and a mustard yellow, but it looks great! I didn't attempt to bother taping it because of the crevices, so I just free-handed it. As I painted each color, I wrapped it around the edges too, but I left the back side white because I knew they wouldn't be seen.

{Candy Corn Cookies}
For a couple of years I've wanted to make candy corn sugar cookies. For some reason, I never have. Tonight I found a cheap and easy way to do it. This Wilton frosting is SO easy to use and it dries well, but can be a bit pricey. It is over $4 a bottle. I am too cheap to buy three different colors so I bought white in hope that I could divide it up and dye it. Thankfully it worked! After microwaving it for 30 seconds, I dumped some in two ziploc baggies. One I dyed orange and one yellow, leaving some white frosting in the bottle. I was going to make my cookies from scratch but after a day like I've had today, I wanted nothing to do with my mixer and a sink full of dishes. So when I went to the store to get butter to make my own, I picked up a tube of pillsbury sugar cookie dough. As it turns out, I don't always have to make everything homemade, haha.
I bought a candy corn shaped cookie cutter but was less than impressed with the way they turned out after they baked.

Fall subway art
FINALLY I have finished my fall subway art project! I bought a sample size of paint from Lowes and painted 2 coats on this board that I also picked up at Lowes. I did that step a couple of weeks ago, before my dad's cancer diagnosis, trip to Ohio, and four days in San Diego. It has been sitting in my garage ever since. I debated how to do this without having stencils. I thought about cutting the shapes on my cricut, but I only have one font and I didn't want them all to be in the same font.
Here is my board.
I typed up my words in different fonts and cut around them so that I could lay them out where I wanted them.
After deciding where I wanted them, I picked them up one by one and rubbed chalk on the back of them. Then I put the paper back and traced the outline with a pencil.
If you squint you can see the chalk. Then I painted it freehand. Yikes. It was time consuming. My hand isn't the steadiest, so I outlined the orange paint with a brown sharpie to straighten up the lines. It made it look SO much neater! I used a staple gun to attach brown polka dot ribbon and also added a pumpkin man out of my orange vinyl and my "stretch your imagination" cartridge.

Berlap candy corn
Yesterday I saw candy corn bunting on my favorite blog, Tatertots and Jello and LOVED it! I knew I had to do it myself! This morning, after looking at it again, I looked through my fabric scraps but didn't have the solid colors I needed. Idea! I had tan, orange, and cream berlap...indian corn! It was super easy!
Step 1: Draw and cut out a template from cardstock.
Step 2: Cut strips of your berlap (lay them as shown so you know you are cutting strips large enough to make your template)
Step 3: sew the strips together
Step 4: Cut out with the template
Step 5: Pin on ribbon and sew
Hang up and enjoy!
I may add another layer and put them closer together, but I love that I was able to do it with stuff I already have!

Berlap pumpkins
Today I stumbled upon Domestically Speaking's berlap pumpkin post and I thought I'd give it a try since I have orange berlap. I used my lid from the biggest bowl I have as a template.

She used fishing line but since I didn't have any, I decided on thin metal. I know how hard it can be to make berlap do what you want from when I made my fabric flowers.
After weaving it through (and don't go to close to the edge because the berlap will fray a bit and then you might lose your stitch), I pulled it tight by pulling each end with pliers.
