Vintage Revamp with Crate Shelf DIY

I've been thinking about changing a few things up in my house lately. Actually, I've started a list for summer projects. Planking the inset wall behind the tv is at the top of the list, and my mess of a bedroom is a close second!

This week has kind of made me stir crazy. I was sick over the weekend and it was so terrible that it left me really weak for the first half of the week. Then one of my daughters got it, and now my other daughter might have it. We've had lots of movies and what seems like non-stop couch time.

I decided today that I would use my time cooped up at home to make a few changes with stuff I already had.
First up, I wanted to mount this BIG (it's much bigger than it looks in the photo) crate on the wall as a shelf. The problem was, there was a phone jack mounted to the wall here. We don't even HAVE a home phone anymore because we just use our cell phones.

I decided to try to remove it. In the past, I just covered it up with various things that didn't have to sit flush to the wall. It was easier than I thought!

I used long screws and a stud finder to mount the shelf securely to the wall. You find studs in the strangest places when hanging heavy things, so my screws are actually dead center through the crate back wall. If my metal tray wasn't in the photo, you would see the screws.  I bought that huge frame at a junker's paradise in Capitola. The cream chalkboard I'd made awhile back and never used.

I then started pulling stuff from other places in the house to arrange the crate. It's tall so it looks weird if there isn't color going up high inside it. I planted some succulents in an old floral tin that I thrifted last week.
Here's kind of a wide angle of my dining room. It's actually bigger than it looks, so I guess I didn't stand far enough back.
I scored some old glass milk bottles at a yard sale last week and they came in this small crate. I turned it on its side and put it on the kitchen counter. I found that cute little blue jar at World Market and I use it to store my chia seeds for smoothies.
I bought this little old mint tin at a thrift store a couple of weeks ago. It makes the perfect quirky planter for a succulent.

I feel like I'm finally starting to make my house look the way I feel on the inside. It might be a little strange to some people, but I just LOVE old stuff mixed with new. You don't have to wait around for your bank account to allow for you to make your house the way YOU want it. You just have to think outside the box.

DIY Vintage Coffee Can Candle

Recently I saw candles made out of vintage coffee cans! You know my complete love for old stuff, so I had to look into it, to see if I could make my own. A quick search on Etsy revealed that this was very possible! You can find many brands/colors from $5+ on Etsy. I bought this one from MoontowerVintage for $7. I wanted red since I'm trying to mix more in with my turquoise kitchen and dining room. Plus the red Folger's reminds my of my coffee-loving daddy. ;)
This was SUPER simple, I didn't even look it up, just played it by common sense. I used a coupon on my soy wax flakes from Hobby Lobby, making it $6. The wicks (10 pack of 3.5") and scent bottle were each a little over a  $1, all from the HobLobster.
I simply melted the wax flakes in a pan and added several drops of the scent oil.
Sprinkle a bit of wax in the can, and hold your wicks in place. I ended up using metal skewers to sandwich the wicks in place while the wax dried.

I also had a milkglass goblet that had stains in the bottom. Not sure if you can actually see them in the picture.
Here's what they look like dry. I LOVE the coffee can one!!!
I had extra wax, so I made the milkglass one as well. I think they're super cute!

Pasadena, Rose Bowl Flea Market Finds!

This past weekend I got to take a mini girls trip to Pasadena! I have LONG wanted to visit the Rose Bowl Flea Market, and so we planned on going way in advance. I was so excited when the date finally arrived! The flea market is on a Sunday so we had Saturday to do whatever we wanted. We made a pit stop at Ikea in Burbank on the way down south. After we got to the hotel, the beautiful Langham Hotel, we went to Old Town Pasadena for some shopping/eating/exploring. We were hoping to find a few of the cupcake places to try out, but only came across one of them in our time there.

This is Pasadena City Hall, peeking through the buildings. It was beautiful.

We walked through one of our hotel's gardens at night. The entire place was SO beautiful!
We had an early morning relaxing breakfast on the hotel terrace.
Look at these beautiful scones, and yogurt and berry breakfast! So pretty!

We arrived at the Rose Bowl at about 8:30 and got GREAT parking really close to the entrance! It was worth it to pay the extra $2 and go before 9am. We meant to be there at 8, but breakfast was just too enjoyable. ;)
We THOUGHT we saw all of the vendors, and THEN we saw there was a bridge in the back of the side section that if you crossed it, looked as though it stretched all the way to the nearby mountain. Seriously, it's enormous! It has 2,600 vendors!

I had to take a picture of these big doors. They were from France, and the center of them is not glass, it is metal detail. They were chippy and turquoise. They were absolutely stunning in person, and larger than life!
I took a picture of these linen pillows because they were too expensive, but I thought I might want to try to make one like the long, cream ruffled one in the picture. There were SO many beautiful things, new and old!

I didn't take a ton of pictures at the market because my hands were busy shopping and dragging my loot!
After we were done shopping, we decided to go drive by the Father of the Bride house, because google put it at less than a mile from our hotel. It's like a dream, isn't it? I love the homes in Pasadena, I could drive around and look at them all day.

The road even looks just like it does in the movie when he drives up the street. It's lined with billowy trees, and completely beautiful.
After lunch, we went across the street to try some French Macaroons. I've always wanted to try some, but have never seen them for sale.

Ok, here is the loot I came home with...

The find of the day was this vintage typewriter for a whopping $35. It was my most expensive purchase, but definitely my favorite. The other ones we had passed were priced at or around $90! I just love it! It actually still has the keys on it too, so it's perfectly acceptable for display. :)
I found the huge version of my Pyrex pattern in reverse colors. I've been wanting to start getting the reverse colors for awhile, as well as find some red. I didn't find any red that I like, but I love this great big bowl. It's bigger than it looks in the picture.
One of my favorite booths was a man who had metal letters in every color of the rainbow in piles all over the ground. They were GREAT! I needed an "E" for Emma's frame we have been working on for her new room. This was perfect! I'm so glad I got it, now I just have to attach it. He had all different sizes, and I loved the enormous ones, but I didn't have any reason to buy one. Don't you hate when that happens!
I was on the lookout for something red to be thrown into the mix of the stuff on the top of my kitchen cabinets. I'm afraid my house is becoming too turquoise so I'm trying to change that. ;) I love this old tin.

My friend was looking for some tiny mini tart tins with flat bottoms for a craft project, so we kept checking out all the vendors we saw. These ones should do nicely for a project I have in mind, we'll see!
I LOVED the vintage linens tents! This particular tent had everything divided into sections: tablecloths, runners, napkins, doilies, hankies, pillowcases, etc. It was huge. I dug though a big box of napkins and put together a stash of 12 vintage napkins for $1 each. I can't wait to use them!
I found a bottle seller (finally!) and I bought 2 lavender and 1 aqua glass bottles to add to my collection. They were from the $3 table. ;)

We also found a tent that had all kinds of metal keys. I bought two of these huge skeleton keys.
My favorite vendor (I should have taken a picture of their booth!) was one called Junk Gypsyz. They had really cool signs that were outlined in metal and had the big bulbs in them. If you want to see what I mean, you can look them up on Facebook. I ALMOST bought a turquoise arrow sign but didn't want to part with that much money. I did buy this metal piece from them for a few bucks, that I'll use to add detail to a project. I also bought some necklace charms.

Well, that's it! We all had a fabulous time! I can't wait to do it again!

Consignment Warehouse {A walk down vintage lane}

This morning I went to Consignment Warehouse to explore a bit, and snap some pics to show you just a FRACTION of what they offer. I'm on a mission to show you that buying vintage/old/antique/used is awesome! There are so many reasons to buy something that has already been "loved", but I'll start with the most obvious...beauty! There is so much character in buying vintage! You can't go into Target and buy something that looks like this! I'm asking you to put on your "potential goggles" and take a walk down vintage lane with me.

Ok, here we go...I've been in love with this huge wire basket with handle ever since I laid eyes on it a couple of weeks ago! I see so much life left in this basket.Oddly enough, LOOK at what I came across on Pinterest last week....it looks almost exactly the same! I actually like the one at the store better, because I think the handle is awesome!

I actually bought the identical set of these green canisters a couple weeks ago, and they now live on the display area above my kitchen cabinets. I love them! There is one more set waiting in the store, as you see above. ;)
I also bought one of these frames last week, this is the last one I saw left today! I'll show you what I did with it after a certain special someone {love you mom!} opens her birthday present! It's SO cool!
Just two of the many versions of wood crates found all over the store!
How cool is this crate? There are a TON of crates in all shapes and sizes all throughout the store. There are about a million and one ways to use a crate, but check out this really awesome way to serve snacks at a party! It would also be great for popcorn cones! The second picture is a crate centerpiece at a wedding! Want some more crate ideas?? Click here to see how I decorated my high-shelving with a mix of crates!

I collect this style and color of Pyrex, and I LOVE them! I display them in my one open cupboard, that I removed the doors from last year. You know I'm a sucker for turquoise or aqua! There's quite a variety of vintage Pyrex at the store just waiting a new home to be put to use whipping up pancake batter in again.
I am drawn to this wooden piece. It's just so pretty to fill up that space on your empty walls that you don't know what to put there.
I LOVE this little drawer! The carved detail on the front is just beautiful! I see this as a place to put your mail that needs to be sorted.
I collect Blue Ball Jars and LOVE them! There are about a billion and one ways to use them beautifully! Below is just one!

I love these shabby chic mirrors! They're just dying to be put to use again, and have such a cottage feel!
Ok, I'm totally into these vanity trays lately. I recently picked up one that is all silver at the flea market. I love these mirrored ones too, I saw a few of them while walking through the store. Can't you just see your perfume bottles all lined up on it?
Ok, this turquoise stool is just AWESOME! Tell me it's not, I dare you!
I really liked this piece when I walked by it, and then I liked it even more when I opened it up! Wouldn't this be great by your entryway?
I have a favor to ask... I know these things usually take time before people actually get motivated to try something, but I'm HOPING that you are curious enough to go check out Consignment Warehouse....and if you do, please tell the staff that you saw their store on The Baeza Blog. :) I'm hoping to feature the store a couple of times a month and constantly show you new things. Guess what though... if you see something you like, don't wait! It may not be there tomorrow and all of these things are one of a kind! Their address is 2639 E. Noble Ave. in Visalia. 636-3380
Want even MORE motivation to check it out?? They offer layaway!! The owner of the store also has a Etsy shop, which you can check out here.... http://www.etsy.com/shop/hautegreenhutch
